Bulgaria shares borders with Serbia and Macedonia to the West, Romania and the Danube to the North, Greece and Turkey to the South and the Black Sea to the East. The Balkan mountain divides Bulgaria into two parts- northern and southern. Capital and the largest city: Sofia Other large cities: Plovdiv; Varna, Rousse, Bourgas Monetary unit: Bulgarian Lev /BGN/ Agriculture: vegetables, fruits, tobacco, wine, wheat, barley, sunflowers, sugar beets; livestock. agriculture 8.5%, industry 33.6%, services 57.9% (2rd quarter 2006 est.). Industries: electricity, gas, water; food, beverages, tobacco; machinery and equipment, base metals, chemical products, coal, refined petroleum, nuclear fuel. Natural resources: bauxite, copper, lead, zinc, coal, timber, mineral water. Export: $15.5 billion f.o.b. (2006 est.): clothing, shoes, iron and steel, machinery and equipment, fuel. Import: $23.8 billion f.o.b. (2006 est.): machinery and equipment; metals and ores; chemicals and plastics; fuel, minerals, and raw materials. Major trading partners: Italy, Germany, Turkey, Belgium, Greece, U.S.A., France, Russia (2004). |
